There is a citation based study that attempts to identify the SuperClassics in MIS. it is by Walstrom and Leonard and is published in Information and Management, vol 38, 2000, pp. 50-73 ("Citation Classics from the Information Systems LIterature). Interestingly, at least on a cursory look, it does not seem to overlap very much with the papers in your existing list. On the other hand, it appears Walstrom and Leonard may have not spent much time ferreting through the papers they included as among the 13 MIS Super classics are Nunnually's Psychometric Book, Porter's Competitive Strategy book, and Thompson's Organizations in Action. The remaining works do contain more IS friendly names however and, given the basis in citations, might be a good counterpoint to your existing data.

Hi Rick,
While this is not a classic (yet!) I thought you might be interested in my
newly published book (through Wiley and sons):
"Managing and Using Information Systems:
A Strategic Approach" by Keri
Pearlson, Jan 2001.
It's a paperback text book designed to be used in MBA MIS courses where
there are lots of cases and readings.
This book provide the foundation
reading, and should be supplemented with current cases and articles.
I"m sure your Wiley rep can get you a copy.
Or you can contact my editor,
Beth Golub (who I've CC'ed on this e-mail) for more information.
Good luck with your course design.

Dr. Ron McGaughey
I have a couple of suggestions for your reading list.
Porter, M. and Millar, V. "How Information Gives you Competitive
Advantage,"
Harvard Business Review, July-August 1985, pp. 149-160.
Alter, Steven, "A Taxonomy for Decision Support," Sloan Management
Review,
(19)1, Fall 1977, pp. 39-56.

Dr. Mary Brabston
You can access my undergraduate (9.450) syllabus at my Web site (listed
below). The Callon readings are from
Callon's Competitive Advantage through
IT, the Neumann's are from Neumann's book that is now out of print (appox.
'93-'94), and the Boar readings are from Aligning IT with Business
Strategies.
I plan to write an actual textbook for this course over the next 1-2 years
and am currently negotiating with a publisher to do this.
Let me know if
you have any suggestions.

Here is one article that I would recommend:
Henderson, J.C. and Venkatraman, N. "Strategic alignment: Leveraging
information technology for transforming organizations," IBM Systems
Journal (32:1), 1993, pp. 4-16.
(FYI, They have published a slightly version of the same
article in a book.)
I am looking forward to see your list, since I am currently
working on a dissertation that looks at the alignment of
Business and IT strategy with IS realization.

You'll find a lot of them in my tutorial paper:
The Path of Development of Strategic Information Systems Theory
http://www.anu.edu.au/people/Roger.Clarke/SOS/StratISTh.html
Judging by the hits, the paper is included in a lot of professors'
reference lists.
I haven't been working in the area for some years;
but I'm told that I
timed it right, and that not too many seminal articles have been published
since about '94. (I'd be interested in your reaction to that proposition -
if my paper needs updating, then (a) I need to know, and (b) I need a
co-author to work on it. I left
academe 5 years ago, and don't have the
time or the Research Assistants on hand to enable me to do the job).

If it isn't being used in another class, I strongly recommend this article
